Carter M. Stewart was appointed to serve as the Senior Vice-President of DLR & Associates Group in 2022.
Mr. Stewart received a J.D. degree from Harvard Law School in 1997. He also holds a Master of Arts Degree in Education Policy from Columbia University and received his undergraduate degree in Political Science from Stanford University. After law school, Mr. Stewart clerked for the Honorable Robert L. Carter, U.S. District Judge in the Southern District of New York and the Honorable Raymond L. Finch, U.S. District Judge in the District of the Virgin Islands.
Mr. Stewart was sworn in as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio on September 30, 2009. President Obama formalized Mr. Stewart’s appointment after the U.S.Senate confirmed his nomination. President Obama nominated Mr. Stewart for U.S. Attorney on the recommendation of U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown. Mr. Stewart led the Attorney General’s Child Exploitation Working Group from 2009 to 2011. From 2012 to 2014, he served on Attorney General Holder’s Advisory Committee, a select group of 16 U.S. Attorneys who meet in Washington, D.C. monthly to provide advice and counsel to the Attorney General on a wide variety of policy, personnel, and budget issues. He currently chairs a working group of U.S. Attorneys focused on addressing
racial disparities within the federal criminal justice system.
Mr. Stewart’s career includes service as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of California from 2003 until 2005. There, he prosecuted a variety of cases including drug and gun possession, social security fraud, obstruction of justice, environmental crimes, the
illegal distribution of steroids to professional athletes, and illegal immigration. He worked as a litigator with the law firm of Bingham McCutchen LLP from 1999 until 2003, and as a litigator with Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease LLP from July 2005 until he was appointed
U.S. Attorney.
Mr. Stewart was a managing director of the Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation (DRK), where he identified and supported new investments and grantees—primarily early-stage, justice-oriented organizations. He was appointed by President Obama to serve as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio, where he emphasized deterrence, crime prevention, and alternatives to incarceration. He has also been a litigator, held academic positions at the Ohio State University, taught history at Friends Seminary High School in Manhattan, and was a New York City Urban Fellow.
Mr. Stewart has served on the boards of the Contemporary American Theatre Company and the Joyce Foundation, and is a current trustee for The Marshall Project, the Nantucket Film Festival, the Nantucket Historical Association, and the Atlantic Foundation.
Mr. Stewart also serves as the Executive Vice-President for programs and research at Mellon Foundation. Mr. Stewart works closely with Mellon’s president, board, and staff to shape the Foundation’s funding priorities and direction.
Mr. Stewart lives in Ohio with his wife and 2 children and he currently licensed to practice in Ohio and various other jurisdictions.
